Recipes

Food allergies.  Argh!  Everyone in my family is allergic to something different, making it quite a challenge to cook meals that fit everyone’s dietary requirements.  Our general policy is that if anyone has a problem eating it, then nobody gets to eat it (that’s what restaurants are for!).  I rarely prepare separate meals for different family members.  Fortunately, our allergies lead to rash/hives, not anaphylactic shock (which my mother has), so every now and then we can slip up without anybody dying.

We use duck eggs in all recipes calling for eggs.  We have a few dairy allergies – to milk and cheese, but not to butter or cream.  Go figure.  Processed corn can cause problems (but corn on the cob is just fine).  Wheat caused quite a bit of trouble when the kids were younger, but they’re able to tollerate small amounts now.

Before you even ask, yes, we have been to an allergist.  When I explained my kids’ reactions to specific foods, he said that sounded pretty obvious and there wasn’t any need to test those foods.  What a waste of money!

In addition to avoiding offensive ingredients, I also require that foods be relatively easy to prepare.  Recipes will be added on the rare occasions that it occurs to me to do so :)
