  1. A/S Teeth implant surgery drilling into the front upper gore bone, could this type of surgery make problems for A S people ?

  2. I don’t have a blog or anything, but I’d like to know how you all got diagnosed? What type of testing was done? MRI? My doctor is oblvious and just wants to send me to a pain clinic again, and I do not want to do that. All they want to do is give me narcotics (that I will not take) and have me do physical therapy, which does not work for me! I have yet to have a recent MRI because my deductible has to be paid, and with 7 kids I just don’t have the money right now. I have had an MRI in the past, when I was about 28 or so (I’m 43 now), but all that showed was one bulging disk. I also had an electromyography at that time which did show a neuropathy in my right leg. Some of my pain does feel arthritic in nature, but there are other pains that do not feel arthritic…the “other” pain feels like deep bone pain. I also currently have a lot of muscle pain, but I carry babies around, lift heavy stuff a lot, and I use my upper body a lot with the work I do (I refurb and paint furniture…using a hand sander causes a lot of upper body muscle and joint pain, particularly in my breastbone area).

I have had back problems since I was about 22. My lower back would hurt so bad that I had to sit on a heating pad all day while I worked (typing job), and I’d have my little 3-year-old walk on my lower back which helped with the pain. My most painful activity is sweeping, after about 5 minutes of it, my lower back hurts so bad I have to stop and rub it for a sec…then go at it again, then stop again, etc.. My shoulders and back hurt when doing dishes after a few minutes, too. And sleeping, oh lordy! I wake up sometimes because either my hips or my shoulders will feel like someone is sticking a hot poker in them! The worst pain is after sleeping for a while, when I go to turn over, I have a lot of pain in my hips and lower back and sometimes have to get my hubby to help me get over, or if I do it alone, I have to slowly wiggle or work it out. It hurts soooo bad that sometimes I don’t want to sleep because I know the pain will come back. That happens mostly if I sleep on my back or my stomach. To sleep on my stomach I have to have something under my hips because it hurts to lay flat on my stomach (that just started within the last 5 or so years). Therefore, I typically avoid my stomach and back to sleep on, but now that I use primarily my sides to sleep on, I started getting the hot poker pain in my shoulder and hip joints. I’m running out of sleeping positions!

Does this sound like ankylosing spondylitis? If this is posted in the incorrect place, please let me know and I will remove it (or the admin may remove it). Thanks so much!

    • I think a heart-to-heart with your primary would be appropriate. Ask what the differential diagnosis is (the list of possibilities he’s considering). Ask if spondylitis is something he considered. If he didn’t would he do so? If he did, how did he rule it out? The average AS patient is misdiagnosed for seven years before getting the right diagnosis. Someday we hope to see that change. If there’s a chance you have AS, then your primary should write a referral to a rheumatologist. check spondylitis.org for more info.

Please don’t rule out PT. A good physical therapist should be able to help. The key is accurately diagnosing the problem so you get the right exercises; then you have to follow through and do the prescribed exercises. Sometimes going to see a different PT can make a big difference.

  3. Hi there! I’m a new blogger (notanoutfitrepeater.wordpress.com) who focuses primarily on fashion and thrifty purchases. I’m determined to live my life with AS as normal as possible and to maintain a positive attitude and fashion helps me do that.

  4. Hi!
Kristen Beck Casting is looking for men and women in their 30’s (or around that age) living with AS (ankylosing spondylitis) for a video (website similar to WebMD, but with professional doctor and patient videos).
This will be a documentary style film, having people tell their own stories and journey from their first diagnosis. It seems people have really had a great time on these shoots, and feel good opening up about what they are living with, including positive and learning outlooks. The client is finishing their documentary and only needs people in their 30s (late 20s , early 40’s can be ok, too)

They would be paid $150 per hour. (It usually only takes an hour). If they are not in the Bay Area, the client will pay for flight, hotel, and expenses.

It looks like it would shoot late March 2017 (flexible depending on your availability) in the San Francisco Bay Area, but I need to get info ASAP.
Please email us by March 13th, latest, but earlier would be best, to designcasting101@gmail.com.
I need a picture, location, approx. age, and your short story of living with AS. We would then contact and conduct a 10 minute Skype interview.

    Thank you!

  5. i just started my blog to give me an outlet to share my feelings about my ankylosing spondylitis. Hopefully it can help someone else deal with their feelings about AS or at least know they are not alone. When I was first diagnosed I was so thankful to find someone who understood.

    Thanks very much!
